New Year Traditions
Many people start off the New Year with resolutions; they
make a commitment to change something about their habits, their bodies, or
their lives. But how many times have you followed through on a resolution?
If you’re like most people, not often. By eight weeks we’ve
stopped going to the gym, picked up our sugar, and given up trying to change
ourselves. Actually, for most of us it happens sooner. So how can we change
this? And do you want to change?
That may be the first clue. No change happens without desire
and big changes need big desire. How badly do you want to change? Can you make
those big changes that big resolutions require? Most people can’t, it’s a
challenge, but we all want to lose weight, quit smoking or give up those bad
for us relationships. What’s the secret?
Want to make a big change? Start small. I’ve been wanting to
write more than one big book a year for a while now and that requires a big
commitment. It means telling my family I’m heading to the library to work on
the weekend. It means working after putting in an eight hour day. It means I
have to get serious.
Or do I?
When I look at my writing I can see that simply adding a few
hundred words a day will make a big difference. Let’s say I want to write
another 80,000 words a year. So we take 365 and divide by 80,000. Or is it take
80k and divide by 365? I’m a writer, not a mathematician, Jim! Just kidding! We
divide 80k by 365 and the answer is rounded to 220 words. Just 220 words extra
per day and that would lead to an entire new full length novel a year!
What kind of habit do you need to break? Or do you need to
forge a new habit? Can you break it down and make it workable? Make small
changes and see where it leads.
What are your
resolutions this year? Let me know and enter to win an e-copy of Little
Red Riding Wolf and if you like Red I have a new book coming out in
February, Snow and the Seventh Wolf.
