Sneak Peek at Finding Home, Desert Secrets Book 4

Hey, all of you Desert Secrets readers, I have a treat for you! Here's a sneak peek of the final book in the Desert Secrets Series. Let me tell you, Bailey Roan is a blast to write, but I'm kind of sad to see this series end. Remember, this book hasn't been to the editor yet.  If you want to get started on the series, you can find it here!

They all walked out the living room and Bailey stopped in her tracks just inside the living room’s entrance. No freaking way. There, in the middle of her room, stood Zane Alder. All six feet with some inches added, of him taking her personal space. Of all actors to come to her house, why him? She hated reading his articles, turned the channel if they had an update about him on TV, and refused to watch one of his movies. Okay, she’d watched about ten minutes of one long ago. Really, she didn’t even know why she disliked him so much. She just had a feeling about him. While most women would be enthralled by his appearance, Bailey found herself disgusted. Maybe she shouldn’t have signed up for this gig.
“Bailey,” Lance said, finally noticing her standing by the entrance. He rushed over to her with his arms open wide for a hug. “It’s been too long.”
Bailey stepped into Lance’s embrace and let herself feel comforted by her best friend’s ex-husband event though a slice of guilt stabbed at her heart. He gave her a gentle squeeze.
“Excuse me,” Zane interrupted, signaling that he had business to contend to with Lance. “I’m hot, sticky, and dehydrated. Not to mention that we’re supposed to start filming in thirty minutes.”
“I know, Zane. We’ll get you taken care of before we start filming. I promise.”
Bailey stepped toward and held out her hand. “Nice to meet you,” she said and introduced herself to Zane. Eddie and Roy were already connecting cables and they’d been the only ones to take a tour of her house. She might as well be responsible in showing the actors around. “I can show you where you can freshen up.”
Take a step backward, he glared at her. His arms were folded tightly across his chest. “Who are you?”
Who was she? Is this guy serious? Bailey Roan, the owner of this house that he’d be using for who knew how long. She tamped down the flaring anger over this man’s rude behavior before saying, “I’m the owner of this house. Would you like me to show you the bathrooms or do you prefer to stand there and stink?” Triumph filled her as she stared at his shocked face. Lance chuckled. “Well?” she asked.

Only 99 cents!

Midnight Secrets is only .99!  Grab a copy while you can here!
Will Miguel’s whispered midnight promises ever see the light of day?

Content with her job as small town waitress and role of single mom, Allison believes she's better off without a man. In her opinion, all they bring is chaos - and that includes the father of her child. So why has Miguel’s arrival shaken her so badly?

It's not easy for Allison to keep Miguel a secret with someone poisoning the food in her bakery and the local sheriff believing she harbors a vendetta against the town because of her tormented past. And then there are the people waiting for her to screw up with the kids. The control Allison has always kept on her life is slipping out of her grasp.

Allison is always upfront with Miguel. There isn't anything she hides from him. Miguel wishes he could say the same. The one thing that Miguel has hidden could be the very secret that drives Allison straight from his arms.

Keeping their secrets and clearing Allison's name just might be harder than either of them have ever imagined.

My Sexy Saturday- Midnight Secrets

Please enjoy the start of the one-night-stand Allison meant to have with Miguel... of course, there is always tomorrow for more of this sexy stuff. If you want to find out if Allison gives in to Miguel, you can grab Midnight Secrets here!

The words intoxicated her, or the wine finally started to work, making her relax against him. Were those the words she needed to hear? She took a deep breath, enjoyed the spicy scent of his cologne, and his arms holding her tight against him. Even the moon seemed a little brighter as it started coming up for the night.

She snuggled closer to him, allowing his hot breath to brush across her ear, sending shivers down her spine. Being with Miguel made her realize how much she’d missed the security that came with being with a man. If she’d known what she’d been missing, she might’ve dated sooner. But what if he caused this sensation to come over her and nobody else could? Nope, not Miguel. It couldn’t be him because that would mean this was more than she thought. No entanglements. Only fun. And that’s what she’d have.

Allison pulled back a tiny bit to look in his dark eyes. She moved her face forward to brush her lips gently against his. The simple kiss shot sparks through her body. Her lips parted and she tasted the tip of his tongue as it played just inside her mouth. Heat swirled around in her belly and traveled in both directions through her body, all the way down to the tips of her toes and up to her cheeks, making every part of her body long for him. Opening her mouth more provided the chance to take his tongue all the way in.

His hand reached under the back of her shirt to trace small circles over her skin with his warm fingers, then moved around her side to her stomach. “Do you want me to stop?”

“Oh, God no.”

She’d probably die from the yearning to be touched pulsating through her nipples, if he dared to stop. It had been so long since someone had come in contact with the sensitive skin and she wanted Miguel to do the touching. And sucking. Probably even some nibbling.

Fantasy Casting- Chelsea Montgomery!

I'm so excited to post this!

Here are the "call backs" for the fantasy casting for The Desert Secrets Series.

Chelsea Montgomery is a petite red-head. Here are the call backs for the fantasy role of Chelsea Montgomery.

Karen pictured her as Rooney Mara. Rooney didn't get the role because I felt she is too thin.

When writing Chelsea's character, Amy McAdams came to mind.

But then Crystal sent in Isla Fisher! Isla totally fits the role of Chelsea!

Up next is the role of Danielle Montgomery. She is more exotic looking with wavy dark hair and tan skin. she has curves in all of the right places. Send in pictures of Danielle Montgomery by Friday so the casting call can be announced on Saturday!

You can buy The Desert Secrets Series here: Confessions, Book 1

Fantasy Casting for the Desert Secrets Series!

I've always dreamed of having one of my books made into a movie. No offers have been made yet, so I'm doing a fantasy casting and I need your help. No purchase is required. I'm providing the characters' description below and the book links at the bottom. What actors would fit these roles?

The females:

Chelsea Montgomery: red hair, fair complexion, petite, in her late twenties. She wears glasses on occasion.
Allison Montgomery: blonde, athletic, medium build. Also in her twenties. She is a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.
Bailey Roan: Dark blonde/light brown hair, medium build, is a trend setter.
Lisa Palmer: dark shoulder length hair, in her late twenties/early thirties. She is your typical soccer-mom.

The males:

Jordan Case: tall, muscular, tan, dark wavy hair. He works in construction.
Miguel Perez: Hispanic, spiked hair, also works in construction, dark hair and eyes.
Seth Brite: Short light brown hair, glasses, medium build, and is a true crime author.
Zane Alder: Dark straight hair, tanned skin, muscular, nice smile, and is a movie star.

Here is what you do:

  • Email me pictures of actors/actresses who you think would fit these roles in the fantasy movie of each book. My email is authorwendyely@gmail.com.
  • I'll decide on the "call back" who could play the part. If you get the "call back" card, I'll post your chosen actor picture on my blog and I'll send you some swag.
  • The final round of actors will be picked and the grand prizes will be announced at that time. It'll be a great stuff.
I'm posting the first round of call backs for CHELSEA next Saturday, so hurry. Send in those actress pictures! You have to live in the US to get the swag pack. Don't worry, distant friends, if you're out of the country you can pick any one of my published ebooks!

Say What?

If you read my blog often you might remember a recent post where I mentioned that authors might have their day, week, or month all planned out and then BAM! Someone throws something in the way. Well... yeah. I That happened to me last week. I had put together a great timeline for writing and editing and was heading out the door for a doctor's appointment when I paused to check the fantastic inbox. Imagine my surprise when I received an email from my publisher saying that she sold her company. SAY WHAT? I hurried out the door and got a second email before arriving at the doctor office. Wendy, here are the rights back to all of the books we had contracted. Not in those exact words but just as quick. But we had just published an anthology! What about that? And why had we done that when this deal was in the works for a long time? My head spun.

But I was delight. While some authors were on (and probably still are) Cloud 9 to be able to transfer their books over to the new division of one of the BIG publishing companies that my publisher has become, I want to keep the rights to my books. I had over year left with my publisher and I couldn't wait for the day to get my rights back... I wanted to be free. That day came! It's here!

Besides my regular work load, I've been working with my cover artist and doing formatting, trying to get these 4 books ready to be re-released. You see, one unexpected (but good!) email can throw an author's schedule way out of whack.

But please celebrate with me... I'm on Cloud 9 too!

Check out these new covers. By the way, these books are up on Amazon already.  You can find them HERE!!

I'm Upset!

I hurried out of bed this morning with one thing on my mind... writing! With everyone still fast asleep, I made coffee, grabbed my laptop and started going through my files, looking for the one manuscript I wanted to work on... Lost and Found, Desert Secrets book 3. And then I noticed the date that I had started the story. Ready for this? January 1st of 2010! I've been working on this one single book off and on for 3 years. My readers have been waiting for this book for 3 years!  I know they have because I get emails. Sigh.

It's time to finish that book already...

If you want to get hooked on another series, try out Confessions. You can find it here. Midnight secrets is the 2nd book in the series.

Not wanting to lose this chance with him, she wiped her sweaty palms down her pants before
putting her arms over his shoulders. Tingles of excitement raced throughout her body when Miguel
slid his arm around her waist and pulled her even closer to him, making her breasts press tight
against his chest. Her breath caught in her throat. Her body stiffened when his lips found the curve
of her neck as they swayed together over the grass, while the slow song filled the warm air with
sweet tunes. The evening would’ve been perfect if she hadn’t had to continuously push away the
panic that tried to make an appearance in her heart.

“We can stop if you aren’t sure about doing this,” he whispered against her ear, his hot breath
sending shivers through her.

“I want to.” Each part of her body screamed for more, in spite of the mix of emotions flooding through her by his embrace. Fear swirled through the arousal and desire to be with him. Maybe she should just end it with him right here. End the dance, end the date, and end any tomorrow that might’ve happened with Miguel. But she didn’t want him to let go of her.

“Then relax. I won’t hurt you.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “Not ever.”

Her stomach tightened as she repeated his words in her mind. He wouldn’t hurt her ever. The more she thought about what he’d said, the more she believed him. The words intoxicated her, or
the wine finally started to work, making her relax against him. Were those the words she needed

I need a title!

As some of you may know, I'm working on the 4th book in the Desert Secrets series for my NaNoWriMo book. I'm tired of calling it Book 4! So... I'm begging for your help! The person who picks the winning title will get an acknowledgment in the beginning of the book.

Here is what the book is about: Bailey Roan decides to lease part of her Victorian house to a production company. Of all the actors in Hollywood, her house becomes the set for an expected hit starring Zane; Hollywood's hottest celebrity of the moment and the actor Bailey can't stand. But Zane has a charisma that Bailey can't ignore. In Bailey's embrace, Zane feels like he's finally found his home and gets to forget he is a celebrity. Until reality knocks and people in Wilson, Arizona realizes who Zane is.

The title that keeps coming to mind is Finding Home but I'd really like to keep the secret/confession type of theme of the series.

Book 1 is Confessions
Book 2 is Midnight Secrets
Book 3 is Lost and Found

So... leave me a comment with your title suggestion!

The Girly Book Blog Hop

Leave a comment for a chance to win an ebook copy of MIDNIGHT SECRETS! Sign up for my newsletter (on the right toolbar where it says join the mailing list) for two chances to win!!

Secondary Characters! We can love them or hate them, huh? I love these "back-up" characters when they do what I want them to and don't try to take over the book. Sometimes while writing, the character's personality is so bright and engaging, it's really hard to pull back the character back out of the spotlight.

And that is exactly what happened with Allison from Confessions.

While writing Chelsea's story, her sister, Allison, almost stole the show. Let me tell you... Allison is spunky. She is a loud mouth! She doesn't do well with taking no for an answer. She goes for what she wants and believes in.

So what did I do?

I yanked her by the hair out of Chelsea's spotlight in Confessions and dropped her right into the heroine spot in Midnight Secrets. She quickly became one of my favorite characters to write and she'll have many appearances in The Desert Secret Series books.

Here is a little peek at Allison Montgomery:

Ready to hit the Off button, she stopped when Chelsea’s voice filled the line.

“I thought you weren’t home.” Allison smiled, happy to be able to talk to her younger sister.

“I just got in. The kids were fighting while I tried getting the door unlocked.”

Allison could hear her niece and nephew bickering in the background. “If you had a cell, you wouldn’t have that problem. Even Jordan wants you to have one.”

“I don’t like them.” Chelsea sighed into the phone. “So what’s going on? It should be the lunch rush. Aren’t you busy?”

“Plumbing problems. We’re closed for the rest of the day.” Should she tell Chelsea about Miguel? She might as well, since there wasn’t any way she could keep it hidden for long anyway, not with the way the man made her feel. Plus, her sister would offer sound advice. “I met a guy.
He’s actually here right now.”

The clattering on the other end of the line sounded as if Chelsea had dropped the phone.
“What? You met a guy?”

“Yes. I’m having a shitty day.” She slid onto a stool at the counter and played with a lock
of her hair.

“Meeting a guy doesn’t make the day shitty, Alli.” Chelsea laughed. She muffled the phone
for a second as she yelled, “Elizabeth, take the makeup off your brother’s face right now.”

“It does for me. I don’t need a man.” She watched as Miguel walked past the front plateglass
window to his truck. The sight of him digging around in his truck made her stomach do a flip-flop. “But this man is gorgeous.”

“Do you want to be single forever? I mean, jeez. Don’t you want a father for your children?”

Father? Children? The words snapped her back to the real world. “Nope. I prefer to be
single.” She continued to watch as he fiddled around with something next to his truck. She didn’t
care about the details of the job, just that he stayed right there. He stood in her direct line of sight.
His silhouette was so strong, she couldn’t help but wonder what he would look like without any
clothes on.

“But you haven’t even had sex in--”

“Don’t remind me,” she interrupted. That was her problem. Maybe she just needed to have
some great, no-holds-barred sex and then it would be out of her system for another century.

Miguel stood up. He was tall, about six foot two. Turning back toward her, he waved when
he noticed her through the window. She smiled at him before he went back behind the building.

“So how did you meet this guy, anyway? There aren’t any eligible men in Wilson worthy of
being with my sister.” The sounds of running water and dishes rattling told her that Chelsea was
probably cleaning the kitchen.

“Promise you won’t laugh?”

“Promise.” The garbage disposal almost drowned out what Chelsea had said.

“Chelsea!” Allison exclaimed.

The garbage disposal clicked off. “Yeah? I’m listening. Who is he?”

“Quit washing dishes! This is important.” Allison slid backward on the stool.

“I’m anxious about something, so I can’t help it.”

“Then do it quietly. Anyway, he’s the plumber here from Harrisburg.”

“No way,” Chelsea said. “Does he have the whole package?”

“Oh, he’s got it all right.”

Now Chelsea laughed. “He’s got the whole saggy pants with his butt crack showing?”

“That’s not the package I had in mind.” Allison thought about the way Miguel looked in his jeans. Even though the pants were slightly baggy, they still showed off the gift he had hidden underneath them, a package Allison wouldn’t be disappointed with for one second. Not that she had a lot of experience. Mitch had been less than thrilling, but she’d wanted to stay with the father of her children. What a joke.

“Is he date material? He could be what you need to tear down your walls.” Chelsea started
the vacuum cleaner.

“Chelsea!”

The vrooming noise shut off.

Allison crossed her arms over her chest. Walls? When had her sister turned into a therapist?

That was crazy. She simply didn’t want to be with a man. “I don’t have any walls up.”

“You most certainly do.” Chelsea sighed. “Promise me one thing.”

“Yeah?” Maybe she should’ve called her other sister, Danielle, about this unexpected
attraction to a man. She should’ve known what Chelsea’s response would be.

“If he asks you out on a date, I think you should go. You don’t have to fall in love or even
have sex with him. Just have fun.”

She uncrossed her arms. If she went on a date, then she wanted to make it worth her while
with some wonderful sex. “You think so? Just have fun?” Could she do it? Fun hadn’t been a word
in her dictionary for a long time now. Her life had been focused on raising two kids, her job, and
trying to save money to buy her own home so they could move out of her mother’s house. Now
that her last goal had almost been reached, she didn’t want anything to screw that up.

“Yes, you can. What’s his name anyway?” Chelsea flushed a toilet, then ran some water.

“It doesn’t matter, since you don’t get to meet him.” Her voice caught in her throat as he
approached the door with Joanie a few steps behind. “Here he comes. I gotta go.”

Six Sentence Sunday- Midnight Secrets

This is book two in my Desert Secret Series. Confessions is book one.

Her mouth formed into a sexy smile as she patted the bed next to her. He loved the itty bitty shorts she wore and the tight t-shirt hugging her curves. Even though the shape of her body made her a little uncomfortable, he had never seen a sexier woman in his life and if it took every day to convince her of that attraction, it would be worth it to him.

But first the secret.

He moved to her side, but leaned up on his elbow so he could look in her eyes. If she told him to go away, he would honor that request, even though it would be less painful if she ripped his heart out.

A very busy week!

Oh wow! I'm glad Saturday has finally arrived. This week was so busy with all my different "author" projects and home life that I decided to take the weekend off. So here I am blogging... hmm...

Anyway, one of my biggest projects this week was putting together my mailing list for my new and improved monthly newsletter. I also started a new book that continues my Desert Secret Series. The books in the series are Confessions and Midnight Secrets. This book will free but only to newsletter subscribers. A chapter will be included in every newsletter. How awesome is that? Balance across the page...

I started helping other authors with their novels in 2008 so I have seen many manuscripts. One of the biggest issues that stands out to me is the imbalance of the essential scene elements. For example: many writers will put a huge chunk of description and then follow that description with several lines of dialogue with no blocking. Such as the following from Midnight Secrets with parts deleted to use as an example:

The white letters spelling out “For Sale” glistened in the morning sunlight, causing Allison
to jerk the wheel quickly to avoid the corner stop sign. What the hell was going on? She pulled to
a stop into a parking spot and yanked her cell out of the center console. Why hadn’t anyone told
her the diner was going up for sale?

“Perry, why is there a for sale sign at the restaurant? Tell me it’s a practical joke,” she boomed
in the phone as soon as her boss answered.

“No joke, Allison. I can’t afford to run it anymore. It’s not bringing in enough income for
me to keep it open.”

“But I made some improvements. People bought stuff off the new menu to take home.”

“It’s not enough. I’m sorry.”

“What the hell am I going to do? There aren’t any jobs here and working in the restaurant is
the only experience I have.”

When we read the above passage without any description and actions to the scene, we are left with one big question: What is Allison doing? We don't get much insight on Allison based on this small exchange of dialogue she has with her boss. The problem with this kind of writing is that the readers can't "see" what is happening. They only know what is revealed through the dialogue. If I had left this scene this way the reader probably would've put the book down. To fix the scene it needs some of her internal dialogue and action.

Here is the actual scene:

Allison crossed her fingers as if she’d turned into a kid and hoped for some good luck. She
took a deep breath and slowly let it out. Here it goes. “But I made some improvements. People
bought stuff off the new menu to take home.” Okay, so it had just been the Carsons, but did Perry
need to know that part of it?

“It’s not enough. I’m sorry.”

“What the hell am I going to do? There aren’t any jobs here and working in the restaurant is
the only experience I have.” She slammed her hands onto the steering wheel. She’d probably have
to move the kids out of Wilson, something she didn’t want to do. New schools, work, neighbors,
and life. It was out of the question. Not only did the kids love it here in Wilson, but she did as well.
Even if her childhood had been a bit rough.

See the difference? In the fake scene, you learned that Allison's job is in jeopardy because her boss needs to sell the place. In the real scene you learned that Allison lives in a small town, working at the restaurant is her only job experience, she is a mother, she'd most likely have to move if the restaurant is sold, and that she is really angry. A few paragraphs of the story paints an ugly picture of a serious situation for Allison.

So how can you tell if your page has all of the elements needed? I suggest printing off your manuscript. Yep, on real paper! Don't use the computer for this technique. You need 4 colors of highlighters. On each page highlight the different elements with a designated color. For example: all of the dialogue will be pink, all the description blue, all of the emotion green, and all of the action will be orange. Go through the page with your highlighters. Do you have mostly orange? You might want to throw in some dialogue or description to help balance out the page. Some scenes will have more colors than others, but you should try to have it as equal as possible.

How much sex do you prefer?

Carolyn and I were recently hanging out with a group of authors we were just getting to know. Beth asked Carolyn about her books. Carolyn explained that she writes under two names. One name because those romances are really clean (no sex) and the pen name because those books have some detailed sex scenes added. Once Beth heard that Carolyn wrote "clean" books, Beth's attention turned to me and remained there. I don't write clean books. My book's main focus is the love between two people but the books do have sex scenes sprinkled through out. This might be too much for some readers. It might not be enough for others. I know that when I'm reading someone else's book and not in the mood to read about sex, I skip over the scene.

After our day with that group of authors, Carolyn and I had a huge discussion about sex in books. She suggested that I get more attention because I don't leave those scenes out. I really don't think clean books are bad and some readers prefer them. When I first wrote Confessions, the book contained "closed door" sex. My critique partner called me because she didn't want to read any more of the story unless I added at least one sex scene. She might've been joking, but I never had to figure that out because I started the first sex scene between Chelsea and Jordan. Writing this type of content scared the crap out of me. I had no idea how to do it. My critique partner, an erotica author, showed me the way.

Now my novels range in heat level. The reason for that is because sometimes I don't think the story always calls for a really naughty scene between the characters. Other times, the story is full of it. Dreaming of Him has one "closed door" sex scene even though the cover is a bit naughty. The sexiest book I've ever done is Cross the Line. All of the other's heat levels fall in the middle. The level of sex included in a story isn't something I focus on. My focus is always making the characters someone the readers can relate to. People occasionally have one-night-stands. So do my characters. Sometimes people have other issues that prevent them from physically opening up to their love interest. Guess what? Some of my characters do that as well. This is where my focus remains.

Speaking of one-night-stands, Allison tried having one of those with Miguel. Here is a little teaser:
“Would you like to dance?”
She nodded while trying to get her heart to stop racing in her chest. Did she even remember
how to do this? It had been so long since she’d danced with someone. She pictured herself fumbling
in his arms and stepping on his shiny shoes.
“I want to.” Each part of her body screamed for more, in spite of the mix of emotions flooding
through her by his embrace. Fear swirled through the arousal and desire to be with him. Maybe
she should just end it with him right here. End the dance, end the date, and end any tomorrow that
might’ve happened with Miguel. But she didn’t want him to let go of her.
“Then relax. I won’t hurt you.” He ran his fingers through her hair. “Not ever.”
Her stomach tightened as she repeated his words in her mind. He wouldn’t hurt her ever. The
more she thought about what he’d said, the more she believed him. The words intoxicated her, or
the wine finally started to work, making her relax against him. Were those the words she needed
to hear? She took a deep breath, enjoyed the spicy scent of his cologne, and his arms holding her
tight against him. Even the moon seemed a little brighter as it started coming up for the night.
She snuggled closer to him, allowing his hot breath to brush across her ear, sending shivers
down her spine. Being with Miguel made her realize how much she’d missed the security that came
with being with a man. If she’d known what she’d been missing, she might’ve dated sooner. But
what if he caused this sensation to come over her and nobody else could? Nope, not Miguel. It
couldn’t be him because that would mean this was more than she thought. No entanglements. Only
fun. And that’s what she’d have.
Allison pulled back a tiny bit to look in his dark eyes. She moved her face forward to brush
her lipsgently against his. The simple kiss shot sparks through her body. Her lips parted and she
tasted the tip of his tongue as it played just inside her mouth. Heat swirled around in her belly and
traveled in both directions through her body, all the way down to the tips of her toes and up to her
cheeks, making every part of her body long for him. Opening her mouth more provided the chance
to take his tongue all the way in.
His hand reached under the back of her shirt to trace small circles over her skin with his
warm fingers, then moved around her side to her stomach. “Do you want me to stop?”
“Oh, God no.” She’d probably die from the yearning to be touched pulsating through her.

It's not easy for Allison to keep Miguel a secret with someone set on shutting down her bakery and the local sheriff believing she harbors a vendetta against the town because of her tormented past.

Keeping her secrets and clearing her name just might be harder than Allison ever imagined.
