My Sexy Saturday- Cross the Line

Want to read a hot little novella by the pool this weekend? Grab a copy of Cross the Line here!

Fixated on him, I let myself be sucked into his stare.
I couldn’t touch him even though I wanted to with every part of my body. He had to be given the control in order to avoid scaring him away. His penetrating gaze told me everything I needed to know. I would have him before the end of the night. But he’d be the one doing the taking. And I’d let him.
“A little fun like this?” I yelled and pounced at him to dunk him under the water. The force of my petite figure was nothing compared to his muscled arms wrapped around me.
“Or like this?” And then he flipped me, sending me under again.
When I surfaced, he looked serious. “Leslie.”
“Yes?” I treaded water a few inches in front of him. The wind blew softly over us, the scent of flowers blowing in the breeze, and the sun sunk below the horizon, leaving us in just the glow of the pool lights. My senses heightened. Every part of my body ached for this man. It took all I had not to reach out for him, to slide my hands over his tattoos, or press my lips against his.
“I’ve never thought about being with another woman until now.” He moved toward me then. There were no more playful gestures. No more laughing, splashing, or fun. Instead, he grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me to him. He stared as I slid my tongue over my bottom lip. Would he get the hint?

My Sexy Saturday- Cross the Line

Sexy... the best part of sexy is when it pops up when you least expect it. In Cross the Line, Leslie is moving into a new apartment in a new city. She is hot, tired, and in no way ready to find sexy in her life. Yet, there he is! Chris Matthews. Enjoy this scene. If you want to read the entire novella, grab it here and don't forget to check out the rest of the blogs in My Sexy Saturday (listed at the bottom!).

From Cross the Line:

Why I’d decided to accept the job offer in Phoenix was beyond me. But moving in the middle of the Phoenix summer? Even worse. Now I could understand why Arizona had earned the nickname “the devil’s playground.”

Playground? Not sure that would be the right word choice because I was convinced I’d arrived in hell itself.
A knock on the door made me jump up from the box, making every strain in my muscles and joints become more prominent. The pain quickly faded as a luscious vision in denim leaned against my doorframe, looking sexy as sin.

A shot of heat spread through my body. I had no idea why he instantly turned me on. I didn’t find goatees attractive, wasn’t into the whole tattoo bit, or the almost too tight t-shirt style, but it all looked perfect on this man. This man definitely had the talent to pull off the bad boy look that made women drop to their knees. Me included.

I quickly ran my fingers through my hair. It had once been in a complete ponytail, but was only partially bound by a hairband at this point. I looked like a mess and knew it. What a great way to start out meeting someone so handsome. But that’s my luck and I had accepted it long ago. To make the best of the situation, I wiped my sweaty palm down my jean shorts before holding it out to him. “Hi. My name’s Leslie Teague.”

“Chris Matthews.” He barely touched my hand before dropping it, as if scorched. He cocked his head toward the front of my apartment. “Need help with that truck out front?”

“I would’ve taken you up on your offer a little earlier, but I’m done now.” The lie floated from my lips as if the act came as a second nature to me. I never lied to people and never, ever asked anyone for help. So why did I find myself holding my hands out toward the room full of boxes as if presenting a prize? “Unless you want to assist in moving the mattress to my bedroom?” A few suggestions as to what we could do on that mattress came to mind, but I did my best to keep my mouth shut.

Say What?

If you read my blog often you might remember a recent post where I mentioned that authors might have their day, week, or month all planned out and then BAM! Someone throws something in the way. Well... yeah. I That happened to me last week. I had put together a great timeline for writing and editing and was heading out the door for a doctor's appointment when I paused to check the fantastic inbox. Imagine my surprise when I received an email from my publisher saying that she sold her company. SAY WHAT? I hurried out the door and got a second email before arriving at the doctor office. Wendy, here are the rights back to all of the books we had contracted. Not in those exact words but just as quick. But we had just published an anthology! What about that? And why had we done that when this deal was in the works for a long time? My head spun.

But I was delight. While some authors were on (and probably still are) Cloud 9 to be able to transfer their books over to the new division of one of the BIG publishing companies that my publisher has become, I want to keep the rights to my books. I had over year left with my publisher and I couldn't wait for the day to get my rights back... I wanted to be free. That day came! It's here!

Besides my regular work load, I've been working with my cover artist and doing formatting, trying to get these 4 books ready to be re-released. You see, one unexpected (but good!) email can throw an author's schedule way out of whack.

But please celebrate with me... I'm on Cloud 9 too!

Check out these new covers. By the way, these books are up on Amazon already.  You can find them HERE!!

My Sexy Saturday: Cross the Line

What is sexy? Each person has their own idea and one thing that pops into my mind are neighbors. Have you ever had one of those sexy creatures that were so close to provide some temptation, yet to close for anything to come of it? This week I'm providing a snippet of when Leslie Teague meets her sexy as hell neighbor, Chris Matthews. By the way, if you are looking for a steamy hot read (the hottest that I've ever written!), Cross the Line is a book to get! You can find the book here: http://amzn.com/B004GHN4YW
When you're done, take a look at the other sexy bloggers listed at the bottom of my post. Happy reading!

From Cross the Line:

A knock on the door made me jump up from the box, making every strain in my muscles
and joints become more prominent. The pain quickly faded as a luscious vision in denim leaned
against my doorframe, looking sexy as sin.

A shot of heat spread through my body. I had no idea why he instantly turned me on. I didn’t
find goatees attractive, wasn’t into the whole tattoo bit, or the almost too tight t-shirt style, but it
all looked perfect on this man. This man definitely had the talent to pull off the bad boy look that
made women drop to their knees. Me included.

I quickly ran my fingers through my hair. It had once been in a complete ponytail, but was
only partially bound by a hairband at this point. I looked like a mess and knew it. What a great
way to start out meeting someone so handsome. But that’s my luck and I had accepted it long ago.
To make the best of the situation, I wiped my sweaty palm down my jean shorts before holding it
out to him. “Hi. My name’s Leslie Teague.”

“Chris Matthews.” He barely touched my hand before dropping it, as if scorched. He cocked
his head toward the front of my apartment. “Need help with that truck out front?”

“I would’ve taken you up on your offer a little earlier, but I’m done now.” The lie floated
from my lips as if the act came as a second nature to me. I never lied to people and never, ever
asked anyone for help. So why did I find myself holding my hands out toward the room full of
boxes as if presenting a prize? “Unless you want to assist in moving the mattress to my bedroom?”
A few suggestions as to what we could do on that mattress came to mind, but I did my best to
keep my mouth shut.

A ringing cell prevented any type of response from him. He pulled it out of the front pocket of
his black jeans shorts, took one glance at the caller ID and frowned. Stuffing the phone in his pocket
again, he nodded toward the door. “I just want you to move the truck. You’re blocking my spot.”

Heat rushed over my cheeks. When had I gotten so presumptuous? Okay, so no moving
mattresses with him followed by mind-blowing sex afterward. With my bubble burst, I took a step
back. “Just give me a few minutes and then it’ll be moved.”

Toxic Relationships in Romance

Shhh.... don't tell anyone this, but... I'm one of the gazillion people addicted to the Jodi Arias trial. No, this blog post isn't to stamp into that trial's fame nor my personal feelings about the trial. So why bring this subject up at all? Because the different aspects of the relationship made me think about a few things. In the trial the lawyers and witnesses often mentioned Jodi and Travis' relationship as being toxic. I agreed whole heartily when the people in the trial declared that as being part of the relationship.

But why?

I believe that every person has or has experienced a toxic relationship with another person. This type of relationship can be with an intimate partner just as Jodi and Travis but it isn't secluded to that. Today I'm going to talk about the the extra people in our lives. You know those side relationships we have with people: the neighbor we chat with over the fence, our best friend's husband, the coworker who always tries to one-up us, or maybe that one person in our life that we are drawn to, stay with a little longer but walk away feeling crappy about ourselves or whatever it was that we discussed with that person.  It doesn't necessarily mean that the person we communicate with is bad... just the relationship has toxic dynamics.

And let's look at romance novels.

What is a common theme in romance? Boy meets girl. They fall in love! The couple has a happily-ever-after.... awe. Yep, I'm a romance writer and swoon over a great love story. It doesn't matter to me if it is fiction or not. So how can we freshen up standard plot lines? After all, how many times can you read about high school loves reunited after being absent from their town and keep the story fresh? By adding the toxic relationship. Each character needs to have some good friends and/or family members, but I always add another character who makes my heroine or hero not quite feel right.

When I was going through some editing for Jesse's Brother, an editor requested I change Samantha's mom's personality. This is the biggest toxic relationship I've ever written. The relationship was a key part of Samantha's personality and the plot that I didn't want to change that element in the book. The book wouldn't have been the same without it. By leaving the toxic relationship in the story, the characters had something to overcome.

Here is a snippet from Jesse's Brother:

“I know. I sure have missed you,” Samantha lied in an effort to mend their broken relationship. She stepped forward for a hug. The strong smell of bleach and cheap perfume assailed her nose. What a relief when her mother took a step back, releasing her from the hug. Her mom glanced down at her watch.

“I have been waiting for hours.”

“I was late leaving but I’m here now. How are you doing? How’s Daddy?”

Her mom ignored the questions and sailed into her own. “Are you eating well?” She gave Samantha the once over as though she was a horse up for bid. “Of course I am.”

“You’re looking too thin, young lady.”

“I’m fine. Couldn’t wait for my vacation from school.” She wanted to add that she’d wished her vacation was somewhere else besides J Ranch, but she bit her tongue to hold the words, and focused on fixing the issues with her family. She turned toward the house, but Mom’s fierce grip stopped her.

“You could have come home over the holidays. We can’t believe you would abandon your family during such important times.”

Some tidbits about Samantha's relationship with her mom: no matter what Samantha does or says, it is wrong; her mother always has something negative to say about Samantha, and Samantha goes out of her way no matter how she feels to mend things with her mother. The dynamics eventually start to change as the character evolves.

The change:

“Are you ready?” she heard from behind her.

Her mother, who never came into her room, was standing at the opened bathroom door. She looked nice, Samantha had to admit, in a red pants suit. The women stared at each other in the mirror. Samantha tried to get the nerve to tell her mom she looked pretty but she couldn’t. Complimenting her mother was so foreign to her that the idea formed itself into a knot in the pit of her stomach.

“Has Noah arrived yet?”

“Um, no, I haven’t seen him. I’m bringing an umbrella, it rained last night.” Her mother turned to leave.

Samantha followed her out. “Maybe he’s waiting outside with Daddy,” she said softly.

“Perhaps you should have worn your hair down this time.”

“Maybe.” Wow. Had Mom just suggested she wear her hair down? She’d never suggested she wear her hair down in her life. Had they gone a step forward? Would her mom start accepting other decisions in her life, such as her relationship with Noah or graduating college?

The big changing point in this relationship was Samantha realizing that her mother's opinion did matter to her. Once that happens, things really start to change between them. To read more of Jesse's Brother http://amzn.com/B009NWWW6G

But toxic relationships between characters don't have to be huge. Here is a small toxic relationship between the main character and a background character in Cross the Line:

Instead, a young nurse pushed in a wheelchair holding a pair of crutches while a clipboard rested under her thin arm. She held out the clipboard to me and once I’d signed the paper, she said, “Your chariot awaits.”

I could see right through her fake smile. She wanted to push me downstairs just as much as she looked forward to cleaning the next patient’s bedpan. I moved the crutches long enough to ease myself onto the chair and felt it jerk forward.

When she jerked the chair around the corner, my side hit the armrest. “Ouch,” I said. “Can you be a little careful?” The nurse did as I asked until we reached the elevator.

Once the doors opened, she shoved the chair forward, almost flinging me from the padded seat. I bit back a yelp that would certainly be followed by curse words directed at the nurse. Alone or not, I just wanted to be at home. With the nurse’s hand against the wheelchair during the entire time in the elevator, the doors couldn’t open fast enough. She pushed me into the hospital lobby to the entrance.

My breath stuck in my chest as Chris rushed in through the automated doors. Gone was the clean man I’d met the day before and been intimate with this morning. Here a firefighter stood, covered in soot, and smelling just as bad. But damn, he was still good to look at. And he had come for me. My heart soared.

“Leslie,” he said, the corners of his mouth turned into a frown as he dropped to his knees and took my hands into his. “Are you okay?”

“As good as can be expected. Doc said I lucked out. Apparently my injuries are minor even though they don’t feel small at all.”

The nurse behind me snapped a piece of gum. “Are you with her?”

“Yes.” Chris didn’t take his eyes off me. “I’m taking her home.”

Another snap of her gum. Damn, she irritated me. “Have a great night.”

Sure thing, Ms. Pleasant.

Can you imagine what the chemistry would be like if they'd spent any more time together? If you want to read more from Cross the Line: http://amzn.com/B004GHN4YW

Read an Ebook Week- Cross the Line

Read an Ebook Week is here! Today I'm feature Cross the Line.

Some little tidbits about the book:

  • This book got me into some trouble! A former neighbor read Cross the Line and his wife decided that he was the hero in the book. Can you believe that? She hated me for 2 years. I swear that I wrote this story before I had even met them.
  • Cross the Line is the naughtiness of all my books. Like something H-O-T? This book is for you!
  • I was inspired to write this book while swimming in my apartment pool. I had just moved from a house into the complex and I was adjusting to the new environment. My brain started going crazy with this new idea. I hurried into my apartment, changed clothes, and planted my butt at my computer. I didn't get up until this story was finished.

Six Sentence Sunday- Cross the Line

“I came to say sorry.” He leaned up against a pile of boxes, his white wife-beater tank top doing nothing to soften his appearance. I wanted to take the shirt off him to see my favorite tattoo—the tribal sun wrapping around his side with one squiggly ray dipping below the waist band of his pants. I wouldn’t mind tracing my tongue along that tat until I reached the end so I could move around to the front.

“Leslie?” he asked, bringing me back to his apology.

Heat rushed to my cheeks.

It's Six Sentence Sunday! This week I bring you six awesome sentences from Cross the Line!

First person or third?

So you're sitting at your computer typing away on your work-in-progress. The story is going so-so, but the words can't be okay. They need to be great! A thought occurs. What if the book would be better in 1st person instead of 3rd?! You scrap the 3rd person point of view version of your story and start over. Yes, I know authors who have done this! Guess what? The story should've been done in 3rd person so back to the drawing board (okay... the computer program) you go...

I haven't done the above scenario. How do I avoid it? First, I've been writing for years. During that time I've learned to accept my strengths and weaknesses which helps weigh the decisions involving each story I write. You see, I don't believe I write as well in 1st person as I do most books in 3rd. It would take a very long time for me to write an entire novel in 1st person.

I have two current releases in 1st person. Cross the Line's idea came to me while I was swimming in the pool. I was new to the apartment complex and didn't know my neighbors. A really hot guy came down to the pool. He sat in the shade and watched me swim. Then came his wife! And his kids! I thought "Oh boy, this would make a really good story." Just so you know: Cross the Line isn't a true story. It came from my imagination :) When I went home I started the novella. I wrote it in 1st person because I knew the length it would be. I wanted a snappy, naughty story so that is what I wrote. It wouldn't have worked as well in 3rd person or if I wrote Cross the Line as a full length novel.

Here is a scene from Cross the Line:

I dropped the last box on the brown tiles and worried whether I’d packed anything breakable inside. With my luck, I had. Relieved to be done moving, I was already tired of the new city I called home even though I’d only been in it for a few hours. If I didn’t find something appealing about the place soon, I would be looking into moving again like when I’d wanted to get out of Billings, Montana. Nothing had been wrong with the old place, I get bored easy and like to move around is all.

My new best friend roared to life, blowing cool air from the vents. Ignoring the open front door, I sat down on the box I’d dropped. I did my best to rub the knots out of my lower back, but with achy arms, I wasn’t doing so well. Sweat trickled down my forehead, requiring me to stop my half-attempt at a massage, grab a washcloth from a nearby bag and mop at the sweat. How did people live like this? Why I’d decided to accept the job offer in Phoenix was beyond me. But moving in the middle of the Phoenix summer? Even worse. Now I could understand why Arizona had earned the nickname “the devil’s playground.”

Playground? Not sure that would be the right word choice because I was convinced I’d arrived in hell itself.

A knock on the door made me jump up from the box, making every strain in my muscles and joints become more prominent. The pain quickly faded as a luscious vision in denim leaned against my doorframe, looking sexy as sin.

***

Then I started Dreaming of Him. My daughter and I started writing the book together. We did the plotting. Okay... she plotted her part and I planned on winging the whole thing because that's how I work. I started the first chapter in 3rd person and my daughter decided to let me write the book on my own. Paranormal is not my genre. I've said it before and I'll say it now: Ghosts scare the crap out of me! With that said, I continued the book as a gift to my daughter because she really wanted to read this story. If she would've wrote with me I could've pulled off a full length novel. With it being an unfamiliar genre, I decided to write the story as a novella. I tried rereading Dreaming of Him in the small part of 3rd person I had done already but it didn't work well. I rewrote the chapter in 1st and the words flew from my fingertips.

Here is a scene from Dreaming of Him:

While I was supposed to be concentrating on making appointments, taking money from
clients, and being fake-happy, my thoughts remained absorbed with Trace. Who was he, and why
did he come to me night after night?

I couldn’t wait for nighttime to see if he showed up. For some reason, I had the idea that
he served as an important piece to my life and would provide me with the puzzle piece needed to
make me happy again. I should be dreaming of him as often as possible. His coming to me
wasn’t coincidental. There had to be a purpose and I wanted to know what it was.

Perhaps he was my soul mate? The man who would provide my soul mate? After all, I
was still single, so it would make sense. Maybe my dreams were really premonitions. I nodded
as the plan took form. I needed Trace sooner rather than later, and would begin looking at men
who resembled him to speed everything up.

“Want to go out after work?” Myana asked as she walked a client up to the desk.

I glanced at her and then the client, sure that the question didn’t qualify as appropriate
conversation in front of the older woman.

“Well?” Myana asked as I took the client’s credit card and swiped it through the machine.

“Sure.” I still didn’t find going out with these women any more thrilling than I had in the
beginning, but what if Trace was going to be there? It might be an opportunity to meet him.
Locating Trace certainly wouldn’t happen by sitting alone in my condo. I handed the client her
receipt and waited for her to leave the spa before adding, “Let’s go dancing, though. Sitting in
the bar while we drink isn’t much fun.” I actually didn’t want to drink at all. I only wanted to

How do you decide on what point of view to use?

Blurb:

Leslie thought she had it all, until Chris showed her the rest.

Another move and a bigger paycheck are all Leslie Teague depends on. Living the ‘no strings’ attached lifestyle has always worked for her…until she arrives in Phoenix.

She doesn’t like bad boy types of men, so why can’t she keep her hands off Chris Matthews, who also just happens to be her new neighbor?
